Dear (name)

pension scheme – automatic enrolment (AE)

You have probably read or seen news that the Government has introduced a law requiring all employers to enrol their workers into a pension scheme, which meets certain minimum standards, unless they are already members of a qualifying scheme.  The law is mainly in the Pensions Act 2008 and Occupational and Personal Pension Schemes (Automatic Enrolment) Regulations 2010.

AE will apply to us on (date), which is our “staging date”.   AE applies to you because you are between age 21 and the state pension age, are paid over £10,000 pa and are not a member of a qualifying scheme.  I enclose:

(a)    a leaflet explaining the general principles of AE;

(b)    [the formal notice with all the information that we are required by law to give to you;] and

(c)    an booklet of our AE provider about the pension scheme we have selected for AE.

(If the formal notice, which can be in the form of document 06 of this pack or as provided by the AE scheme provider, is not enclosed but is to be sent later, omit (b) above and at this place in the letter insert the following. the formal notice with all the information that we are required by law to give to you, will be send to you later.)

We are [not] deferring the date of your AE.  Therefore we will enrol you into our AE scheme on (date).  This, as the law requires, is automatic, so there is no application form.  Our AE provider will send you a welcome pack including its brochure and your unique ID number.

You may opt out of our AE scheme by as stated in the formal notice obtaining an opt-out form from the scheme and sending or handing in the completed form to us.  If your do this in the time scale stated in the formal notice, you will be removed from the pension scheme, and any contributions you will have made will be refunded.  We will be obliged by the law to re-enrol you on our next automatic re-enrolment date, which will be approximately three years form our staging date or previous re-enrolment date..

Your personal details will be passed to our AE scheme.  Your contributions will be shown on your payslip.

Please ask me if you have any queries about AE.

Yours sincerely
